Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany and offers a lot of history to explore. Visitors on a limited budget can easily enjoy the beautiful architecture, such as the Porta Nigra, and stroll through the charming streets of the old town. Additionally, there are several museums and parks to visit, including the Rhineland Museum and the Palastgarten, both of which are free.

Day trip plan

• Start the day with a visit to the Porta Nigra, an impressive Roman gate that dates back to the 2nd century AD
• Marvel at the remains of the Imperial Baths, which give an insight into the luxurious lifestyle of the Romans
• Visit the Cathedral of Trier, a stunning example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and home to the Holy Robe, a relic said to have been worn by Jesus
• Stroll along the banks of the Moselle River and enjoy the picturesque scenery
• End the day with a traditional German meal at Zur Glocke, a cozy restaurant that offers delicious local cuisine at reasonable prices
